- Active Ingredient: The active ingredient in many Roundup products is glyphosate, which is a systemic herbicide.
- Mechanism: It is a foliar-absorbed, post-emergence herbicide, meaning it is applied to the leaves of weeds and kills them down to the roots.
- Selectivity: It is a broad-spectrum, non-selective herbicide, which means it will kill any plant it contacts, not just weeds.
- Speed: It is slow-acting, with maximum effect potentially taking 2 to 4 weeks.
- Soil Activity: It has little to no soil activity, so it does not prevent future weeds from growing.
- Application: It should only be applied to lush, actively growing weeds. Mowing weeds before application will delay results because the plant needs sufficient leaf area to absorb the product. Rain within 4 to 6 hours of application can reduce its effectiveness.
Health and safety information
Short-term exposure: Acute exposure to the spray mist can cause irritation to the eyes, nasal passages, throat, and lungs.
- Long-term exposure: Some scientific bodies, such as the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), have classified glyphosate as "probably carcinogenic to humans" after reviewing studies, particularly linking it to non-Hodgkin lymphoma in cases of long-term occupational exposure.
- Precautions: To minimize risk, avoid contact with skin, eyes, and clothing. Wash hands thoroughly after handling the product. Wait at least 24 hours before walking barefoot on a treated area, or wait until after a rain or watering.
